About Checkered PastCheckered Past was founded in 2007 by Khairil M. Bahar as an all-round video and audio production and post-production hub. Coming from an independent film background, Khairil's vision for Checkered Past is to offer high quality production regardless of budget whilst at the same time giving himself and fellow filmmakers a place to produce independent short films and features.  Many people ask us what the name of the company means and we wish we could give a symbolic and inspirational rationale behind it all, but we can't. For those who think the founder has a checkered past, he does, but that's not why it's called that. It's called 'Checkered Past' because Khairil M. Bahar has a thing for girls in red checkered skirts and wanted to have one on the logo. We tell you this because we don't want to bullsh*t you. We like to be transparent with our clients and we like to do honest work. Equipment and FacilitiesWith the advances of HD technology Checkered Past now shoots only in high definition. Unlike most production companies in the country, our in-house camera is the Canon 5D Mark II - a full-frame DSLR which shoots beautiful high-definition video using DSLR lenses, giving our video a unique look very similar to film.  However, for jobs where standard definition video or specialized cameras are required we are in contact with a number of good rental houses that supply any and every type of camera that would suit your needs. We also have our own post-production facilities for video editing and color correction (PC platform) as well as basic audio recording and editing facilities for music composition and voice overs. Motion graphics, animation and CGI is outsourced to a third-party company (Voxel Imaging) who we have a good working relationship with. |
About Khairil M. BaharKhairil M. Bahar's began his career in the film industry with his debut independent feature film 'Ciplak' which he wrote, directed, edited produced and acted in and brought the entire film in at RM10,000. 'Ciplak' went on to win the Anugerah Skrin 2006 for Best Alternative Film and was screened at selected GSC cinemas as well as screening at the Boulder Asian Film Festival in Denver, Colorado. Khairil then went on to work on a variety of television and corporate projects before starting up Checkered Past. His recent works include the short film 'Healthy Paranoia' for 15Malaysia, writing seven episodes of 'Ghost Season 2' for Popiah Pictures (of which he directed one of the episodes and acted in another) and 'London Calling', his second feature film due to be released in 2010.
